East of the Sun, West of the Moon is the fourth studio album by a-ha — Morten Harket (vocals), Pål Waaktaar-Savoy (guitar and songwriting) and Magne Furuholmen (keyboards and songwriting) — from Oslo, Norway, released in 1990 on Warner Bros. Records. The album reached No. 1 in Norway and No. 12 on the UK Albums Chart. Following the synth-pop of their earlier albums — including the debut Hunting High and Low (1985), which featured the global hit Take On Me — East of the Sun, West of the Moon represented a more mature, atmospheric and rock-oriented direction, with a warmer, more organic production that suited Harket's soaring vocal. Crying in the Rain reached UK No. 11 and US No. 26 (1990), and I Call Your Name reached UK No. 33 (1991). The 11-track album demonstrates the band's ability to combine melodic pop with atmospheric production and a more introspective songwriting approach, giving them a distinctive position in the early-1990s pop-rock landscape.
