A Star Is Born is the fourth film adaptation of the classic Hollywood story, released in 2018 and marking the directorial debut of Bradley Cooper, who also stars, co-wrote the screenplay and oversaw the music. Lady Gaga plays Ally, a struggling singer-songwriter discovered by fading country rock star Jackson Maine (Cooper) and propelled to global fame as his own career and personal struggles spiral. The film received eight Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress, winning for Best Original Song with Shallow — one of the most celebrated film songs of the decade. Gaga's performance was widely regarded as a revelation, and Cooper's direction — particularly his immersive, concert-level approach to the music sequences — gives the film a raw, visceral energy that sets it apart from its predecessors.
