Album Introduction
The Album is the fifth studio album by ABBA — Agnetha Fältskog (vocals), Anni-Frid Lyngstad (vocals), Benny Andersson (keyboards and vocals) and Björn Ulvaeus (guitar and vocals) — from Stockholm, Sweden, released in December 1977 on Polar/Epic Records and produced by Andersson and Ulvaeus. The album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 14 on the Billboard 200. The album accompanied the film ABBA: The Movie (1977), directed by Lasse Hallström, which documented the band's Australian tour. Take a Chance on Me reached UK No. 1 and US No. 3 (1978) and The Name of the Game reached UK No. 1 (1977). The album's closing three tracks form a mini-musical, The Girl with the Golden Hair — comprising Thank You for the Music, I Wonder (Departure) and I'm a Marionette — which demonstrates the band's growing theatrical ambition and points toward the stage musical Mamma Mia! that would follow decades later. The nine-track album demonstrates ABBA's ability to combine polished pop with musical sophistication and emotional directness at the height of their commercial powers.
