Angels & Demons is the second Robert Langdon film, released in 2009 and directed by Ron Howard, adapted from Dan Brown's novel by screenwriters David Koepp and Akiva Goldsman. Tom Hanks returns as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, summoned to the Vatican when four cardinals are kidnapped by the Illuminati — an ancient secret society — on the eve of a papal conclave. With an antimatter bomb hidden somewhere in Vatican City and a countdown of hours, Langdon must decode centuries-old symbols and navigate the labyrinthine politics of the Catholic Church to prevent catastrophe. Filmed partly on location in Rome with extraordinary access, the film is a slick, propulsive thriller that improves on The Da Vinci Code in pace and tension. Grossing over $485 million worldwide, it remains one of the most entertaining entries in the Langdon series.
