Beat This: 20 Hits from Rhythm King is a 1989 compilation released on Rhythm King Records, the influential London independent label founded in 1987 by James Horrocks and Martin Heath. Rhythm King was one of the most important British independent labels of the late 1980s, sitting at the intersection of house, hip-hop, rare groove and electronic pop at the precise moment those genres were reshaping British popular music. The label's roster included S'Express (Mark Moore), whose Theme from S'Express reached UK No. 1 in April 1988 and became one of the defining records of the acid house era; Bomb the Bass (Tim Simenon), whose Beat Dis reached UK No. 2; and The Beatmasters, whose Rok Da House (featuring Cookie Crew) reached UK No. 5. The compilation also draws on the label's wider catalogue of hip-hop, rare groove and soul, including Schoolly D — one of the pioneers of Philadelphia gangsta rap — and Gwen McCrae's Funky Sensation, a 1981 Miami soul classic. - Funky Sensation – Gwen McCrae — The 1981 Miami soul classic that became a staple of the rare groove scene; its inclusion here demonstrates Rhythm King's awareness of the deeper soul and funk tradition that underpinned the label's more contemporary electronic output.
