Autoamerican is the fifth studio album by Blondie — Debbie Harry (vocals, from Miami, Florida, raised in Hawthorne, New Jersey), Chris Stein (guitar), Clem Burke (drums), Jimmy Destri (keyboards), Nigel Harrison (bass) and Frank Infante (guitar and bass) — released in November 1980 on Chrysalis Records and produced by Mike Chapman. The album reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and No. 7 on the UK Albums Chart. The Tide Is High — originally recorded by The Paragons in 1967, written by John Holt — reached US No. 1 and UK No. 1 (1980). Rapture reached US No. 1 and UK No. 5 (1981) — the first US No. 1 single to feature a rap verse, making it a landmark in the mainstream acceptance of hip-hop, with lyrics referencing Fab Five Freddy and Grandmaster Flash. The 12-track album opens with Europa, an orchestral instrumental, and demonstrates Blondie's extraordinary stylistic range — new wave, reggae, disco, jazz and hip-hop all feature across the record, giving it a musical ambition and versatility that distinguishes it from their earlier, more focused new wave albums.
