Plastic Letters is the second studio album by Blondie — Debbie Harry (vocals), Chris Stein (guitar), Clem Burke (drums), Jimmy Destri (keyboards), Frank Infante (guitar) and Nigel Harrison (bass) — released in February 1978 on Chrysalis Records and produced by Richard Gottehrer. The New York band had emerged from the CBGB scene alongside Television, Talking Heads and The Ramones, and Plastic Letters was their first album to achieve significant commercial success in the UK, where it reached No. 10 on the UK Albums Chart. Denis — a reworking of Randy & the Rainbows' 1963 doo-wop hit Denise, with the gender of the name changed — reached UK No. 2 and introduced Blondie to a mass British audience. (I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear followed at UK No. 10. The album's 13 tracks are characteristically brief — most under three minutes — reflecting the band's roots in the fast, economical songwriting of the New York punk and new wave scene, with the longer Kidnapper and Cautious Lip providing a more experimental and atmospheric counterpoint on Side B.
Stand-Out Tracks
- Denis — A reworking of Randy & the Rainbows' 1963 doo-wop hit Denise; Harry's vocal — playful, knowing and completely assured — gives the familiar song a new wave energy and a gender-reversed lyric that makes it entirely Blondie's own. UK No. 2.
- (I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear — One of the album's most melodically sophisticated and lyrically distinctive tracks; a warm, driving new wave pop song with a lyric of romantic and almost supernatural intensity that gives the album one of its most immediately replayable and emotionally engaging moments. UK No. 10.
- Bermuda Triangle Blues (Flight 45) — A driving, rhythmically confident punk-pop track that captures the band's CBGB roots at their most direct and energetic; its combination of Harry's cool vocal and the band's tight, economical arrangement gives it a visceral immediacy that makes it one of the album's most exciting moments.
- Kidnapper — The album's most expansive and atmospherically distinctive track at nearly five minutes; a slow-building, guitar-driven song that demonstrates the band's ability to operate beyond the two-minute punk-pop format and gives the album one of its most sonically adventurous and rewarding moments.
- Detroit 442 — A driving, high-energy punk-pop track that gives the album one of its most viscerally exciting and rhythmically compelling moments; its combination of Stein's guitar, Burke's drumming and Harry's completely assured vocal gives it a raw energy that captures the CBGB scene at its most immediate.
