Album Introduction
Rockbird is the second solo studio album by Debbie Harry, released in November 1986 on Chrysalis Records and produced by Seth Justman of the J. Geils Band. Harry had launched her solo career with KooKoo (1981), produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic, while Blondie was still active; Rockbird followed after Blondie's dissolution in 1982 and represented her most sustained and commercially focused solo statement to that point. The album reached No. 31 on the UK Albums Chart and its lead single French Kissin' in the USA reached UK No. 8, demonstrating that Harry's commercial appeal and vocal distinctiveness remained completely intact outside the Blondie context. In Love with Love followed at UK No. 45. Justman's production gives the album a warm, mid-1980s pop-rock sound that suits Harry's voice — cool, knowing and completely assured — while allowing her personality to remain at the centre of every track.
Stand-Out Tracks
- French Kissin' in the USA — The album's most immediately accessible and commercially effective single; a driving, melodically irresistible pop-rock track with a lyric of transatlantic romance and a production of complete contemporary precision that gave Harry her biggest solo UK hit to that point. UK No. 8.
- In Love with Love — A warm, mid-tempo pop track that gives the album one of its most melodically generous and emotionally direct moments; Harry's vocal is completely assured and the Justman production gives the song a contemporary sheen that suits her aesthetic perfectly. UK No. 45.
- Rockbird — The title track and one of the album's most atmospherically distinctive and sonically adventurous moments; a slow-building, guitar-driven rock song that demonstrates Harry's ability to inhabit a more brooding and dramatically intense register with complete conviction.
- I Want You — The album's opening track and a confident statement of intent; a driving, rhythmically confident pop-rock song that establishes Harry's solo aesthetic from the very first note and demonstrates her ability to construct a hook of immediate commercial appeal.
- Free to Fall — One of the album's most melodically sophisticated and emotionally direct deeper cuts; a warm, mid-tempo pop song that gives Harry the opportunity to demonstrate a more vulnerable and unguarded side of her vocal personality beyond the uptempo singles.
