Album Introduction
The Innocents is the third studio album by Erasure — Andy Bell (vocals) and Vince Clarke (keyboards and production) — released in April 1988 on Mute Records and produced by Stephen Hague. Bell, born in Peterborough, and Clarke, from Basildon, Essex — previously a founding member of Depeche Mode, then Yazoo (with Alison Moyet) and The Assembly — had formed Erasure in 1985, and The Innocents delivered their commercial breakthrough on the largest scale. The album debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart — their first chart-topper — and spawned three UK Top 15 singles. A Little Respect reached UK No. 4 and US No. 14, Ship of Fools reached UK No. 6 and Chains of Love reached UK No. 11. Hague's production gives the album a warm, polished synth-pop sound that showcases Bell's extraordinary vocal range — one of the most powerful and emotionally expressive in British pop — while Clarke's melodic instincts and electronic production craft give every track a hook of complete commercial precision.
