Album Introduction
The First of a Million Kisses is the debut and only studio album by Fairground Attraction — Eddi Reader (vocals), Mark E. Nevin (guitar and principal songwriter), Simon Edwards (bass) and Roy Dodds (drums and percussion) — released in 1988 on RCA Records. Reader, born in Glasgow, had worked as a session and backing vocalist before this debut album brought her immediate and widespread recognition. The album won the Brit Award for Best Album in 1989, and its lead single Perfect — written by Nevin — reached UK No. 1 and won the Brit Award for Best Single in 1989. Find My Love followed at UK No. 7. The band's sound — drawing on acoustic folk, jazz, country and classic pop in equal measure, with Reader's warm, expressive voice at its centre — was entirely distinctive in the late 1980s British pop landscape, and the album's combination of melodic generosity and acoustic sophistication has given it an enduring appeal that few of its contemporaries have matched. The group split shortly after the album's release; Reader went on to a successful solo career.
