4 is Foreigner's fourth studio album, released in July 1981 on Atlantic Records. Produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange — fresh from his work with AC/DC and Def Leppard — it became the band's commercial peak, reaching #1 in the US Billboard 200 and #5 in the UK, and spending ten weeks at the top of the American charts. Lange's crisp, powerful production gave the album a harder, more focused edge than its predecessors, while the songwriting reached new heights of melodic sophistication. With over 7 million copies sold in the US alone, it remains one of the definitive AOR albums of the era and an essential piece of 80s rock vinyl.
