I Am Legend is a post-apocalyptic science fiction thriller released in 2007 and directed by Francis Lawrence (Constantine, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), adapted by Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman from Richard Matheson's landmark 1954 novel. Will Smith plays Robert Neville, a virologist and US Army colonel who appears to be the sole survivor in New York City three years after a genetically engineered measles virus — originally developed as a cancer cure — has killed most of humanity and transformed the rest into photosensitive, predatory creatures called Darkseekers. Neville spends his days scavenging, conducting experiments on captured Darkseekers in search of a cure, and maintaining the routines that keep him sane — accompanied only by his German Shepherd, Sam. The film grossed over $585 million worldwide and is one of Will Smith's finest performances — a largely solo turn that sustains the film's considerable emotional weight across its entire runtime.

- Sam the dog — Neville's German Shepherd is the film's emotional anchor; the relationship between man and dog is the film's most affecting element, and the scene in which Sam is lost is one of the most genuinely upsetting moments in any mainstream blockbuster of the decade.
- The Darkseeker sequences — Lawrence stages the creatures' nocturnal attacks with real tension; the darkness, the sound design and Neville's desperate improvised defences give the film's horror sequences a claustrophobic intensity that is genuinely frightening.
- Richard Matheson's source novel — Matheson's 1954 novel is one of the foundational texts of modern horror and science fiction, directly influencing Romero's zombie films and countless others; the film's adaptation is imperfect but captures the novel's central meditation on isolation, otherness and the nature of monstrosity.
