Insurgent is the second film in The Divergent Series, released in 2015 and directed by Robert Schwentke (RED, The Time Traveler's Wife), adapted from Veronica Roth's second novel by screenwriters Brian Duffield, Akiva Goldsman and Mark Bomback. Shailene Woodley returns as Tris Prior, now a fugitive haunted by guilt following the events of the first film, as the ruthless Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) hunts her down in pursuit of a mysterious box that only a Divergent can open. Theo James returns as Four, with Miles Teller's Peter and Naomi Watts joining the ensemble as Four's mother Evelyn. The film grossed over $297 million worldwide and raises the stakes of the first film considerably, with Schwentke delivering more ambitious action sequences and a darker emotional register as Tris confronts her own trauma. The simulation sequences in particular are visually inventive and give the film a distinctive identity within the franchise.
