Absolute Torch and Twang is the third studio album by k.d. lang and the Reclines, born Kathryn Dawn Lang in Consort, Alberta, Canada, released in 1989 on Sire Records and produced by Ben Mink and k.d. lang. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 1990 and is widely regarded as the definitive statement of lang's early country period — a complete and fully realised synthesis of traditional country, western swing, torch song and honky-tonk that demonstrates both her extraordinary vocal range and her deep understanding of the classic country tradition. The album's 12 tracks range from the joyful irreverence of Big Boned Gal to the aching romanticism of Trail of Broken Hearts and the western swing exuberance of Full Moon Full of Love, demonstrating the full breadth of lang's musical personality. It was her last album in the country idiom before the move into the more mainstream adult contemporary sound of Ingénue (1992), and as such represents the culmination of one of the most distinctive and accomplished early careers in country music.
