Hounds of Love is the fifth studio album by Kate Bush, born Catherine Bush in Bexleyheath, Kent, released in September 1985 on EMI Records and self-produced. The album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. It is structured in two halves: Side One (Hounds of Love) contains the singles, while Side Two (The Ninth Wave) is a seven-track conceptual suite about a person lost at sea and drowning — one of the most ambitious and atmospherically distinctive conceptual sequences in British pop history. Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) reached UK No. 3 in 1985 and famously reached UK No. 1 in 2022 after featuring in Stranger Things, 37 years after its original release. Cloudbusting reached UK No. 20, Hounds of Love reached UK No. 18 and The Big Sky reached UK No. 37. Bush built the album using a Fairlight CMI synthesiser and a Linn drum machine alongside organic instrumentation, giving it a sound that combines electronic innovation with emotional directness in a way that has made it one of the most critically acclaimed and enduring albums of the decade.
