Katrina and the Waves is the self-titled debut major-label album by Katrina and the Waves — Katrina Leskanich (vocals), Kimberley Rew (guitar), Vince de la Cruz (bass) and Alex Cooper (drums) — released in 1985 on Capitol Records. Leskanich was born in Topeka, Kansas, and Rew had previously been a member of The Soft Boys (with Robyn Hitchcock). The album reached No. 28 on the UK Albums Chart and its lead single Walking on Sunshine — written by Rew — reached UK No. 8 and US No. 9, becoming one of the most immediately recognisable and joyfully exuberant pop songs of the decade and one that has remained in continuous cultural circulation ever since. Going Down to Liverpool — also written by Rew and previously recorded by The Bangles — is another of the album's most melodically distinctive and immediately appealing tracks. The 10-track album demonstrates the band's ability to combine driving, guitar-led pop-rock with a melodic generosity and emotional directness that gives every track an immediate and sustained commercial appeal.

- Walking on Sunshine — Kimberley Rew's composition and one of the most immediately joyful and emotionally uplifting pop songs of 1985; Leskanich's vocal — exuberant, completely uninhibited and delivered with total conviction — gives the song an energy and warmth that has made it one of the most enduring and universally recognised recordings of the decade. - Going Down to Liverpool — Written by Rew and previously recorded by The Bangles; a driving, guitar-led pop-rock track with a hook of complete commercial appeal and a production that gives it a contemporary mid-1980s energy that suits the band's aesthetic perfectly.
- Do You Want Crying — A warm, mid-tempo pop-rock track that gives the album one of its most melodically generous and emotionally direct moments; Leskanich's vocal is completely assured and the production gives the song a contemporary sheen of complete commercial precision.
- Cry for Me — The album's most expansive and emotionally ambitious track at nearly five minutes; a slow-building, atmospheric pop-rock song that gives Leskanich the opportunity to demonstrate the full range and expressiveness of her voice in a more reflective and emotionally complex context.
