Like a Virgin is the second studio album by Madonna — born Madonna Louise Ciccone, from Bay City, Michigan — released in November 1984 on Sire Records and produced by Nile Rodgers. The album reached US No. 1 and UK No. 1, establishing Madonna as one of the world's biggest pop stars. Like a Virgin reached US No. 1 and UK No. 3 (1984), Material Girl reached US No. 2 and UK No. 3 (1985) and Into the Groove reached UK No. 1 (1985). The 10-track album demonstrates Madonna's ability to combine dance-pop, electronic production and catchy songwriting to create some of the defining sounds of the decade, influencing fashion, music videos and the direction of mainstream pop throughout the 1980s.
