The Stars We Are is the fourth solo studio album by Marc Almond, from Southport, Lancashire — formerly of Soft Cell (with Dave Ball), released in 1988 on EMI Records. The album reached No. 27 on the UK Albums Chart. Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart — a duet with Gene Pitney, originally a 1967 Pitney solo hit — reached UK No. 1 (1988), giving Almond his first solo chart-topper and one of the most commercially dominant recordings of his career. Tears Run Rings reached UK No. 43 (1988). The 10-track album demonstrates Almond's ability to combine pop, soul, chanson and electronic influences with his distinctive theatrical vocal style and emotive songwriting, giving him a distinctive position in the late-1980s British pop landscape as a solo artist operating beyond the synth-pop origins of Soft Cell.
