Album Introduction
Michael Joseph Jackson, born in Gary, Indiana, first found fame with the Jackson 5 before becoming one of pop’s most influential solo performers. Released in 1987 on Epic, Bad reunited Jackson with producer Quincy Jones, with Jackson also credited as co-producer. Its blend of tightly wound funk, polished pop, rock guitar and soulful balladry makes it a rewarding album to revisit from beginning to end.
From the punchy title track to the uplifting “Man in the Mirror” and the restless groove of “Smooth Criminal”, this is a record packed with distinctive songs. Jackson’s layered vocals and sharp rhythmic arrangements give the music its character, balancing dance-floor energy with more reflective moments.
The photographed copy includes the illustrated inner sleeve and lyric insert, adding plenty to explore while the record plays.
Stand-Out Tracks
Bad
Clipped rhythms, bold brass accents and a commanding vocal give the title track its swagger. It’s a punchy opener that sets the tone for the album’s harder-edged sound.
The Way You Make Me Feel
A rolling shuffle groove and buoyant bassline underpin one of the album’s most infectious melodies. Jackson’s playful phrasing gives the track a warmth that contrasts with the tougher title song.
Man in the Mirror
Beginning with a restrained arrangement, this reflective song builds into a sweeping, gospel-inflected finale. The layered backing vocals give its message of personal change an emotional lift.
Dirty Diana
Crunching guitar and a dramatic vocal bring a rock edge to the second side. Its darker atmosphere provides a striking contrast to the album’s brighter pop moments.
Smooth Criminal
An insistent bassline and tightly interlocking rhythms make this a compelling closing track. Jackson’s urgent delivery and the song’s narrative tension reward a focused listen through headphones.
