The Living Years is the second studio album by Mike & The Mechanics — Mike Rutherford (guitar and bass, also of Genesis) and Paul Carrack (vocals and keyboards, formerly of Ace and Squeeze) — released in 1988 on Atlantic Records. The album reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 13 on the Billboard 200. The Living Years — written by Rutherford and B.A. Robertson about father-son relationships — reached US No. 1 and UK No. 2 (1988), becoming one of the most emotionally direct and commercially dominant recordings of the decade. Nobody's Perfect reached UK No. 43 (1988). The 10-track album demonstrates the band's ability to combine melodic rock with thoughtful, emotionally direct songwriting and the distinctive vocal interplay between Carrack and Paul Young (not to be confused with the solo artist of the same name), giving them a distinctive position in the late-1980s British rock landscape.
