Album Introduction
New Kids on the Block’s Step by Step combines upbeat dance-pop, group harmonies and romantic ballads across twelve tracks. Released in 1990 on CBS, the album features Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood.
Produced and arranged by Maurice Starr, with co-production credited to New Kids on the Block and Michael Jonzun, the record balances the energetic title track with the bright pop of “Tonight” and slower selections such as “Let’s Try It Again”. Its mix of electronic rhythms, layered vocals and melodic hooks captures the group’s early-1990s sound.
This copy includes the pictured printed inner sleeve, featuring lyrics, production credits and individual messages from the group, giving fans plenty to explore alongside the music.
Stand-Out Tracks
“Step by Step”
A punchy rhythm and an immediately memorable chorus give the opening track its lively appeal. The vocal exchanges add to the playful, group-performance feel.
“Tonight”
Bright harmonies and contrasting sections give this track a distinctive character. Its singalong refrain provides one of the album’s most welcoming pop moments.
“Baby, I Believe in You”
A smooth, melodic selection that brings the vocals to the foreground. Its romantic tone offers a softer contrast to the album’s more energetic dance-pop tracks.
“Let’s Try It Again”
An unhurried ballad built around a pleading vocal and a gentle arrangement. It provides a reflective change of pace midway through the first side.
“Games”
A more rhythm-focused selection with a firmer, streetwise edge. Group vocals and a rap contribution add variety to the album’s polished pop approach.
