Album Introduction
Prince Rogers Nelson, born in Minneapolis, brings his distinctive blend of funk, rock, pop and soul to Batman, the song soundtrack accompanying Tim Burton’s 1989 film. Released on Warner Bros. Records, the album channels the contrasting personalities of Gotham City through taut electronic grooves, theatrical vocals and romantic ballads.
Produced and largely composed, arranged and performed by Prince, the record moves from the dark pulse of “The Future” to the exuberance of “Partyman” and the intimate atmosphere of “Scandalous”. Sheena Easton joins him on “The Arms of Orion”, while dialogue samples from the film help connect the music to its cinematic world.
This is Prince’s song album rather than Danny Elfman’s orchestral score. The photographed copy includes the printed lyric and credits inner sleeve, with images of Batman, the Joker, Vicki Vale and Prince, making it an appealing addition for both Prince fans and soundtrack collectors.
Stand-Out Tracks
The Future
A spare electronic rhythm and insistent bass establish a darker mood from the opening moments. Prince’s controlled delivery and the tightly arranged layers give the track an uneasy, forward-driving energy.
Electric Chair
Crunching guitar and a hard-edged funk rhythm bring a rawer sound to the first side. The urgent vocal adds bite, creating a striking contrast with the ballad that follows.
The Arms of Orion
Sheena Easton joins Prince for a gently unfolding duet built around a romantic melody. Their contrasting voices and the softer arrangement provide a reflective pause among the album’s more rhythm-driven songs.
Partyman
A playful vocal, punchy rhythm and bursts of brass give this track its mischievous character. Its compact arrangement captures the Joker’s flamboyance while remaining unmistakably Prince.
Batdance
Film dialogue, abrupt changes of pace and dense electronic rhythms turn the closing track into a theatrical collage. Moving between frenetic passages and slower funk sections, it provides the album’s most unconventional finale.
