Risky Business is the film that made Tom Cruise a star, released in 1983 and written and directed by Paul Brickman. The story follows Joel Goodsen, a strait-laced Chicago teenager left home alone by his parents who, through a series of increasingly reckless decisions, ends up running an impromptu brothel out of the family house while trying to secure his place at Princeton. Sharp, funny and surprisingly sophisticated, the film works as both a teen comedy and a pointed satire of Reagan-era capitalism and ambition. The iconic socks-sliding scene and the sultry chemistry between Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay made it a cultural touchstone, while the Tangerine Dream soundtrack remains one of the great 80s film scores.
