Room Service is the seventh studio album by Roxette, released in October 2001 on EMI Records and produced by Per Gessle and Clarence Öfwerman. The Swedish duo — Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, from Halmstad in southern Sweden — had by this point sold over 75 million records worldwide and established themselves as one of the most commercially successful pop acts in history, with a run of international hits from The Look (1988) through It Must Have Been Love (1990) and Joyride (1991) that had made them one of the defining sounds of the early 1990s. Room Service was released just months before Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumour in September 2002, a diagnosis that would curtail Roxette's activity for nearly a decade. The album's 12 tracks demonstrate the duo's continued mastery of melodic pop-rock construction — Gessle's instinct for a hook and Fredriksson's extraordinary voice, warm and powerful in equal measure, remain as effective as ever — and the album reached the Top 10 in multiple European countries.
Highlights
- The Centre of the Heart (Is a Suburb to the Brain) — The album's lead single and one of its most immediately recognisable tracks; a driving, melodically direct pop-rock song with a title of characteristic Gessle wit and a chorus that demonstrates his ability to construct a hook of complete commercial precision. Fredriksson's vocal is warm and completely assured.
- Milk and Toast and Honey — The album's most emotionally affecting ballad and one of its most melodically generous moments; a warm, mid-tempo song with a lyric of domestic contentment and a performance from Fredriksson that is intimate and completely sincere, and one of the most immediately replayable tracks on the record.
- Real Sugar — The album's opening track and a statement of intent; a driving, energetic pop-rock song that opens the album with real confidence and establishes the duo's continued commercial vitality, with a production that is crisp and contemporary and a vocal that is immediately engaging.
- My World, My Love, My Life — The album's closing track and one of its most emotionally resonant; a warm, melodically rich ballad that brings the album to a conclusion of genuine feeling and gives Fredriksson the opportunity to deliver something completely unguarded and personal in what would prove to be one of Roxette's final albums before her illness.
- Bringing Me Down to My Knees — One of the album's most sonically distinctive and rhythmically engaging tracks; a mid-tempo pop-rock song with a production that draws on early 2000s contemporary sounds while retaining the melodic directness that has always defined Roxette's best work.
