Safe House is a slick, propulsive CIA espionage thriller released in 2012 and directed by Daniel Espinosa, with a screenplay by David Guggenheim. Ryan Reynolds plays Matt Weston, a junior CIA operative running a quiet safe house in Cape Town who finds his world turned upside down when the agency's most wanted rogue agent, Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington), is brought in for interrogation — and the facility is immediately attacked. Forced to go on the run with a man he cannot trust, Weston must figure out who is trying to kill them and why. The film grossed over $208 million worldwide and is a confident, well-crafted thriller that benefits enormously from Washington's commanding screen presence. The Cape Town setting gives the action sequences a distinctive visual energy, and Espinosa directs the chase and combat scenes with real kinetic force.
