Album Introduction
Sky’s Sky 3 combines classical guitar, progressive rock and jazz-influenced instrumental arrangements across eleven tracks. Released in 1981 on Ariola, the album features John Williams, Kevin Peek, Herbie Flowers and Tristan Fry, with keyboard player Steve Gray joining following Francis Monkman’s departure.
Recorded and mixed at Studio 3, EMI Abbey Road, the album was produced by Sky, Tony Clark and Haydn Bendall. Original compositions sit alongside John Williams’ arrangement of Handel’s “Sarabande”, with guitars, keyboards, bass and percussion giving the record its varied instrumental palette.
This copy comes in the pictured gatefold sleeve, with detailed track notes, musician credits and recording information inside.
Stand-Out Tracks
“Westwind”
Kevin Peek’s composition gives the guitars room to explore an extended, melodic arrangement. The sleeve notes describe a gently developed opening followed by a faster section, making it a rewarding selection for listeners who enjoy Sky’s blend of delicacy and drive.
“Sarabande”
John Williams’ arrangement of Handel brings the group’s classical influences into focus. Its measured pace provides a reflective contrast to the more rhythm-led original compositions.
“Connecting Rooms”
Written by Tristan Fry, this extended piece offers space for the band’s instrumental interplay. The sleeve notes connect its inspiration to an early-morning scene during the group’s European tour.
“Moonroof”
A lively Kevin Peek composition that opens the second side with a change of energy. Its rhythmic approach provides a counterpoint to the more contemplative passages elsewhere on the album.
“Sister Rose”
Steve Gray’s composition highlights the interplay between bass and guitar. John Williams’ sleeve note draws particular attention to Herbie Flowers’ bass part and Kevin Peek’s guitar sound.
