Album Introduction
Soul II Soul’s Vol. II: 1990 – A New Decade brings together deep basslines, soulful vocals and laid-back dance rhythms in a distinctly British club sound. Released in 1990 on 10 Records, the album finds the London collective exploring the space between soul, funk, hip-hop and dance music, with grooves that reward listening beyond the singles.
“Get a Life” and “A Dream’s a Dream” provide the immediate hooks, while tracks such as “Courtney Blows” reveal a jazzier side to the record. There’s a spacious, unhurried quality to the arrangements, allowing the vocals, percussion and instrumental details to settle into the groove.
It’s a natural choice for an evening listening session or a soul-and-dance collection. The photographed copy includes the printed inner sleeve, with artwork that complements the bold colours of the outer cover.
Stand-Out Tracks
Get a Life
A rolling rhythm and an assured vocal from Marcia Lewis give the opening track its uplifting character. The blend of soulful melody and weighty bass introduces the album’s sound.
A Dream’s a Dream
Victoria Wilson-James brings a powerful vocal presence to this richly layered dance track. Its flowing melody and propulsive rhythm make it one of the album’s most immediate selections.
Love Come Through
A relaxed groove leaves room for the vocal and instrumental textures to breathe. It’s a fine example of the collective’s ability to make dance music feel intimate rather than overpowering.
Missing You
Kym Mazelle’s expressive vocals bring warmth and emotional depth to this soulful selection. The measured rhythm provides a change of mood without losing the album’s rhythmic thread.
Courtney Blows
Saxophone takes centre stage on this jazz-flavoured instrumental. Its fluid playing adds another dimension to the album, making it a rewarding moment for listeners drawn to the musical detail behind the beats.
