Album Introduction
The An Officer and a Gentleman original motion picture soundtrack was released in 1982 on Island Records, accompanying Taylor Hackford's romantic drama starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger. The film was one of the biggest box office successes of 1982, grossing over $129 million in the United States alone, and its soundtrack is one of the most eclectic and musically interesting of the era — a genuine compilation rather than a composed score, drawing on existing recordings from across the rock and pop spectrum. The orchestral score was written by Jack Nitzsche, who also co-wrote the film's defining song Up Where We Belong with Buffy Sainte-Marie and Will Jennings; performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. The album's most unexpected inclusion is Dire Straits' Tunnel of Love — the full 8-minute album version from Making Movies (1980) — which gives the soundtrack one of its most musically substantial and sonically distinctive moments.

- Tunnel of Love – Dire Straits — The full 8-minute album version from Making Movies (1980); Mark Knopfler's extended guitar narrative of a fairground romance is one of the most musically ambitious tracks in the Dire Straits catalogue, and its inclusion here gives the soundtrack one of its most substantial and rewarding moments.
- Hungry for Your Love – Van Morrison — A warm, soulful track from Morrison's Into the Music (1979) period; its inclusion demonstrates the soundtrack's willingness to draw on the full breadth of contemporary rock and soul rather than restricting itself to obvious commercial choices.
- Tush – ZZ Top — The Texas trio's 1975 boogie-rock classic from Fandango!; its driving, no-nonsense energy gives the soundtrack one of its most viscerally exciting and immediately recognisable moments, and demonstrates the eclectic range of the compilation's musical choices.
- Love Theme – Lee Ritenour — A smooth, jazz-influenced instrumental that gives the soundtrack one of its most melodically generous and atmospherically distinctive moments; Ritenour's guitar work is warm and completely assured, and the track provides a welcome contrast to the more rock-oriented selections.
