The Hurting is the debut studio album by Tears for Fears — Roland Orzabal (vocals, guitar and keyboards) and Curt Smith (vocals and bass) — from Bath, Somerset, released in March 1983 on Mercury/Phonogram Records and produced by Chris Hughes. The album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart. The album's themes of emotional pain, identity and personal struggle were inspired by the primal therapy theories of Arthur Janov, giving the record a distinctive psychological depth that set it apart from its synth-pop contemporaries. Mad World reached UK No. 3 (1982), Change reached UK No. 4 (1983) and Pale Shelter reached UK No. 5 (1983). The 10-track album demonstrates the band's ability to combine electronic pop, new wave and atmospheric production with emotionally direct songwriting, giving them a distinctive position in the early-1980s British synth-pop landscape.
