The Seeds of Love is the third studio album by Tears for Fears — Roland Orzabal (vocals and guitar, from Portsmouth) and Curt Smith (vocals and bass, from Bath) — released in September 1989 on Fontana Records and produced by Dave Bascombe and Tears for Fears. The album reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 8 in the United States. Sowing the Seeds of Love — a deliberate homage to The Beatles' I Am the Walrus — reached UK No. 5 and US No. 2. Woman in Chains — featuring Oleta Adams on piano and vocals, whom the duo had discovered performing in a Kansas City hotel bar — reached UK No. 26. Advice for the Young at Heart reached UK No. 36. The eight-track album is one of the most musically ambitious and emotionally expansive British pop albums of the decade, with tracks ranging from the six-minute Sowing the Seeds of Love and the eight-and-a-half-minute Badman's Song to the more intimate Famous Last Words. The album took four years to record following Songs from the Big Chair (1985) and marked a significant artistic evolution for the duo.

- Sowing the Seeds of Love — A deliberate homage to The Beatles' I Am the Walrus and one of the most musically ambitious and immediately recognisable British pop singles of 1989; its combination of a kaleidoscopic, psychedelic production and Orzabal's completely assured vocal gives it a grandeur and emotional directness that has made it one of the most enduring recordings of the decade. UK No. 5. US No. 2.
- Woman in Chains — A slow, atmospheric pop-rock ballad featuring Oleta Adams on piano and vocals; Adams's contribution gives the song an emotional depth and vocal power that makes it one of the most immediately distinctive and dramatically effective tracks on the album. UK No. 26.
- Badman's Song — The album's most expansive and musically ambitious track at over eight minutes; a slow-building, gospel-influenced rock epic that gives Orzabal and Adams the opportunity to deliver some of their most vocally extraordinary and emotionally intense performances on the record.
- Advice for the Young at Heart — The album's most immediately accessible and melodically generous moment; a warm, mid-tempo pop track that gives Smith the opportunity to demonstrate the more intimate and unguarded side of his vocal personality. UK No. 36.
- Year of the Knife — One of the album's most rhythmically driven and sonically adventurous tracks at seven minutes; a slow-building, atmospheric rock song that demonstrates the duo's ability to sustain dramatic tension across an extended musical sequence.
