She Was Only a Grocer's Daughter is the second studio album by The Blow Monkeys — Dr. Robert (Bruce Robert Howard, vocals and guitar), Neville Henry (saxophone), Mick Anker (bass) and Tony Kiley (drums) — released in 1987 on RCA Records. Dr. Robert, born in Hartlepool, County Durham, had formed the band in London in the early 1980s, and this second album delivered their commercial breakthrough alongside one of the most politically pointed titles in British pop. The album's title is a direct reference to Margaret Thatcher — daughter of a Grantham grocer — and the record is one of the most explicitly politically engaged British pop albums of the Thatcher era, combining sophisticated blue-eyed soul and jazz-pop production with lyrics of social commentary and political dissent. It Doesn't Have to Be This Way reached UK No. 5 and Out With Her reached UK No. 30. The album's closing track Cash is a duet with Curtis Mayfield, one of the most celebrated figures in American soul and funk, whose presence gives the album a moment of genuine musical and cultural weight.
