Don't Take My Coconuts is the debut solo album by The Coconuts — Adriana Kaegi, Cheryl Poirier and Taryn Hagey — released in 1983 on Mercury Records. The Coconuts were the backing vocal group and theatrical foil for Kid Creole (August Darnell) and his band Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band alumni, the New York ensemble whose combination of Latin rhythms, big band arrangements, theatrical costumes and witty, knowing lyrics made them one of the most distinctive and visually arresting acts of the early 1980s. This solo album gave the Coconuts the opportunity to step forward from their supporting role and demonstrate their own musical personality, drawing on the same Latin-tinged funk-pop and theatrical aesthetic that characterised the Kid Creole recordings. The 9-track album includes Did You Have to Love Me Like You Did, a UK single, and a cover of Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg's If I Only Had a Brain from The Wizard of Oz (1939), alongside original material that demonstrates the group's ability to construct a hook of immediate pop appeal within their distinctive theatrical framework.
