Album Introduction
No More Heroes is the second studio album by The Stranglers — Hugh Cornwell (vocals and guitar), Jean-Jacques Burnel (bass and vocals), Dave Greenfield (keyboards) and Jet Black (drums) — from Guildford, Surrey, released in September 1977 on United Artists Records and produced by Martin Rushent. The album reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart. No More Heroes reached UK No. 9, Something Better Change reached UK No. 47 and Dagenham Dave reached UK No. 55. The Stranglers occupied a distinctive position in the British punk and new wave scene — older than most of their contemporaries, more musically accomplished, and with Greenfield's atmospheric keyboards and Burnel's aggressive bass giving them a sound that was darker, more sophisticated and more controversial than their peers. The 11-track album demonstrates the full range of their approach, from the driving aggression of Bring On the Nubiles and Burning Up Time to the more reflective English Towns and the extended School Mam at nearly seven minutes.
