The Very Best Of Joan Armatrading is the definitive singles and highlights compilation from one of Britain's most singular and enduring singer-songwriters, released in 1991 on A&M Records. Born in St Kitts and raised in Birmingham, Armatrading emerged in the mid-1970s as a completely distinctive voice in British music — a self-taught guitarist and composer whose songs drew on rock, folk, soul and blues without belonging entirely to any of them, and whose voice — a rich, expressive instrument of remarkable range and emotional intelligence — was immediately recognisable and unlike anyone else's. The compilation spans her career from Down to Zero (1976) through to More Than One Kind of Love (1990) across 14 tracks, and includes a remixed version of her signature song Love and Affection. Armatrading was the first Black British woman to receive a Grammy nomination and has received an OBE and a CBE for her services to music. This compilation remains the essential introduction to one of the most important and underappreciated careers in British popular music.

- Drop the Pilot — A warm, rhythmically inventive pop song that showcases Armatrading's lighter touch; the production is bright and the vocal is relaxed and playful, making it one of the compilation's most immediately enjoyable and replayable moments and giving her a further UK Top 20 hit.
- Down to Zero — One of the compilation's earliest and most emotionally raw tracks; a folk-rock song of heartbreak and loss that demonstrates the directness and emotional honesty that defined Armatrading's songwriting from the very beginning of her career, and one of the most affecting performances in her catalogue.
