The Wolverine is the sixth film in the X-Men franchise, released in 2013 and directed by James Mangold — the filmmaker who would later helm the acclaimed Logan (2017). Hugh Jackman returns as Logan, summoned to Japan by a dying billionaire whose life he saved decades earlier during the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. What begins as a farewell visit becomes a fight for survival as Logan finds himself stripped of his healing factor and hunted by yakuza, samurai and mutant enemies. Mangold brings a more grounded, character-driven approach to the material than previous X-Men entries, drawing on the classic Frank Miller and Chris Claremont Wolverine comic run for its Japanese setting and themes of honour, mortality and identity. A significant step up from X-Men Origins: Wolverine and essential viewing for fans of the character.
