Album Introduction
Vienna is the fourth studio album by Ultravox — Midge Ure (vocals and guitar), Billy Currie (keyboards and violin), Chris Cross (bass) and Warren Cann (drums) — released in July 1980 on Chrysalis Records and produced by Conny Plank at his studio in Germany. Ure, born in Cambuslang, Scotland, had previously been a member of Slik, Rich Kids and briefly Thin Lizzy before joining Ultravox and transforming the band's sound from its earlier punk-influenced direction towards the cinematic, synthesiser-driven aesthetic that defines this album. The album reached No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart. The title track Vienna reached UK No. 2 — famously kept off the top position by Joe Dolce's Shaddap You Face in one of the most celebrated near-misses in British chart history — and All Stood Still reached UK No. 8. Plank's production gives the album a cold, atmospheric grandeur that perfectly suits the band's cinematic ambitions, and the nine tracks range from the extraordinary seven-minute synthesiser epic Astradyne to the intimate emotional directness of Passing Strangers.

- Mr. X — One of the album's most atmospherically distinctive and dramatically ambitious tracks at over six minutes; a slow, brooding synthesiser piece with a lyric of Cold War paranoia and urban alienation that gives the album one of its most cinematically resonant and emotionally complex moments.
- Passing Strangers — One of the album's most melodically generous and emotionally direct moments; a warm, mid-tempo synth-pop track that gives Ure the opportunity to demonstrate the more intimate and unguarded side of his vocal personality beyond the cinematic grandeur of the album's more expansive tracks.
