Album Introduction
Bring a little neon-lit, late-eighties atmosphere to your turntable with the original motion picture soundtrack to Cocktail. Released in 1988 on Elektra, this compilation brings together breezy pop, rootsy rock and rock ’n’ roll classics from an eclectic line-up including The Beach Boys, Bobby McFerrin, Starship and Little Richard.
Made for the Tom Cruise film, the soundtrack moves from the tropical escapism of “Kokomo” to the stripped-back charm of “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”. It’s a lively, feel-good selection, equally suited to a nostalgic listening session or an evening with friends. The film artwork adds another unmistakably eighties touch to the package.
Stand-Out Tracks
The Beach Boys – “Kokomo”
Sunshine harmonies and an easygoing tropical groove make this one of the soundtrack’s defining moments. It’s an invitation to leave everyday life behind for somewhere warmer.
Bobby McFerrin – “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”
Layered vocals, a whistled melody and a reassuring refrain give this track its distinctive character. Its uncluttered sound offers a relaxed contrast to the album’s louder rock selections.
Starship – “Wild Again”
Big vocals and glossy production bring an arena-rock lift to the opening side. A strong choice for listeners who enjoy the bold, larger-than-life sound of late-eighties pop-rock.
The Georgia Satellites – “Hippy Hippy Shake”
A gritty, high-energy take on the rock ’n’ roll favourite. Driving guitars and a loose, bar-band feel make it one of the record’s liveliest selections.
Little Richard – “Tutti Frutti”
An explosive vocal performance and pounding piano bring the album to a spirited close. It’s a shot of early rock ’n’ roll energy among the soundtrack’s contemporary recordings.
