Album Introduction
Released in 1988 on Telstar, House Hits ’88 brings together 20 tracks spanning house, hip-hop and sample-driven dance music. Billed on the sleeve as “The House Album of the Year”, it captures the crossover between club culture and chart pop through artists including S’Express, Bomb the Bass, Coldcut and Royal House.
From the cut-and-paste energy of “Beat Dis” to the insistent groove of “Can You Party”, this compilation offers a lively snapshot of late-eighties dance music. Rap favourites from Eric B. & Rakim and Salt ’N’ Pepa sit alongside club anthems, making it an engaging listen for anyone drawn to drum machines, bold samples and bass-heavy rhythms.
Stand-Out Tracks
S’Express – Theme from S-Express
A colourful collage of vocal samples, disco textures and a propulsive house beat. Its playful arrangement captures the adventurous spirit running through the compilation.
Bomb the Bass – Beat Dis
Punchy drums and rapidly shifting samples create a tightly packed piece of dance-floor invention. Its cut-and-paste approach bridges hip-hop production and electronic club music.
Royal House – Can You Party
An insistent rhythm and repeated vocal hooks give this track its infectious energy. It brings a raw, club-focused edge to the album.
Coldcut featuring Yazz and the Plastic Population – Doctorin’ the House
Soulful vocals meet chopped-up samples and a buoyant electronic groove. The contrast between Yazz’s delivery and the busy production makes it one of the collection’s most distinctive selections.
Eric B. & Rakim – I Know You Got Soul
Rakim’s measured, rhythmically precise delivery rides a funk-driven backing. It provides a strong hip-hop counterpoint to the compilation’s house selections without losing its dance-floor momentum.
