Album Introduction
Now Dance ’86 brings together twenty dancefloor favourites across two vinyl records, capturing a colourful mix of soul, synth-pop, funk and early house. Released in 1986 by Virgin and EMI, the compilation features Diana Ross, Jermaine Stewart, Communards, Gwen Guthrie, Grace Jones and Aretha Franklin.
Presented as “The 12″ Mixes”, the collection gives these tracks room to stretch out, with the sleeve advertising over two hours of music. Familiar pop hooks sit alongside club-focused grooves, from “Chain Reaction” and “Don’t Leave Me This Way” to Farley “Jackmaster” Funk’s “Love Can’t Turn Around”.
The pictured gatefold sleeve opens to artist photographs and track information, making this a nostalgic snapshot of mid-1980s dance music as well as an extended listening session across four sides.
Stand-Out Tracks
“Chain Reaction” – Diana Ross
A bright, buoyant selection with a sweeping chorus and an insistent dance-pop pulse. It opens the compilation with a lively balance of soulful vocals and polished pop production.
“Don’t Leave Me This Way” – Communards
Urgent vocals and a driving rhythm give this disco reinterpretation its dramatic lift. The contrast between the lead voices makes it one of the collection’s most distinctive performances.
“Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ On but the Rent” – Gwen Guthrie
A firm bass-led groove underpins Guthrie’s direct, assured delivery. Its uncluttered rhythmic feel provides a satisfying contrast to the bigger, more theatrical pop selections.
“Love Can’t Turn Around” – Farley “Jackmaster” Funk
A house selection built around a persistent electronic groove and an expressive vocal performance. It introduces a different club sound alongside the compilation’s soul and synth-pop material.
“Midas Touch” – Midnight Star
Sleek keyboards and a supple funk rhythm give this track its distinctive sheen. Its combination of melodic hooks and dancefloor momentum fits neatly into the collection’s extended-mix format.
