Album Introduction
Now That’s What I Call Music 10 brings together thirty tracks spanning synth-pop, rock, dance and soul. Released in 1987 through EMI, Virgin and PolyGram, the compilation captures a varied moment in pop, with Pet Shop Boys, T’Pau, Heart, M/A/R/R/S, Wet Wet Wet and Erasure among the featured artists.
Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé’s “Barcelona” opens the collection with an ambitious meeting of rock and opera. From there, the four sides move between the electronic pulse of “Pump Up the Volume”, the dramatic balladry of “Alone” and the bright pop of “Sweet Little Mystery”. The final side closes with The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s “A Fairytale of New York”, as titled on this sleeve.
This double-vinyl edition comes in the pictured gatefold sleeve, with artist photographs and individual track notes inside. It offers both a nostalgic listening session and a colourful snapshot of the music collected by the NOW series in 1987.
Stand-Out Tracks
“Barcelona” – Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé
A dramatic opening built around the contrast between Mercury’s rock delivery and Caballé’s operatic voice. Its sweeping arrangement gives the compilation a grand entrance.
“Rent” – Pet Shop Boys
A restrained electronic arrangement supports a cool, reflective vocal. The balance of melancholy and melodic pop provides a quieter contrast to the collection’s bigger rock performances.
“China in Your Hand” – T’Pau
An expressive lead vocal and a steadily building arrangement give this ballad its emotional weight. The broad chorus makes it a natural centrepiece for the second side.
“Pump Up the Volume” – M/A/R/R/S
A rhythm-driven selection built from electronic beats and layered samples. Its club-focused approach adds a distinctive texture alongside the compilation’s guitar bands and vocal pop.
“A Fairytale of New York” – The Pogues with Kirsty MacColl
Contrasting voices and vivid storytelling give the closing track its distinctive character. The movement from a reflective opening into a lively band arrangement makes it a memorable finish.
