Album Introduction
The Chart brings together fifteen selections spanning dance-pop, soul, reggae and synth-pop. Released in 1986 on Telstar, the compilation features Timex Social Club, Sinitta, Five Star, Billy Ocean, Modern Talking and Depeche Mode.
“Rumors” opens the first side with a crisp electronic groove, followed by the playful “Holiday Rap” and Boris Gardiner’s romantic “You’re Everything to Me”. The second side moves from Sinitta’s energetic “So Macho” to the smoother sound of Billy Ocean’s “Love Zone”, before closing with Depeche Mode’s “A Question of Time”.
The colourful picture sleeve features artist photographs on both sides. This is the individual fifteen-track The Chart LP, catalogue STAR 2278 A, originally issued as part of The Chart and The Chart ’86 triple-album package. The other records from that set are not shown here.
Stand-Out Tracks
“Rumors” – Timex Social Club
A distinctive electronic rhythm and conversational vocal give the opening track its immediately recognisable character. Its blend of pop hooks and dancefloor groove sets a lively tone.
“So Macho” – Sinitta
An upbeat rhythm and playful delivery make this one of the compilation’s brightest moments. The direct, memorable chorus captures the exuberant side of mid-1980s dance-pop.
“Find the Time” – Five Star
Layered group vocals sit over a polished, rhythm-driven arrangement. Its balance of melodic pop and dance energy makes it a natural first-side highlight.
“Brother Louie” – Modern Talking
A pulsing electronic backing and high harmonies give this selection its distinctive Euro-pop sound. The dramatic chorus provides a strong contrast to the album’s soul and reggae tracks.
“A Question of Time” – Depeche Mode
A harder electronic edge gives the closing track a different atmosphere. Its insistent rhythm and darker textures add variety to the compilation’s predominantly bright pop sound.
