Album Introduction
Released in 1988 on Fanfare/PWL, The Hit Factory: The Best of Stock Aitken Waterman Vol. 2 brings together fourteen tracks showcasing the production partnership of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman. Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Rick Astley, Bananarama and Mel & Kim lead a line-up built around bright synthesizers, dancefloor rhythms and instantly memorable pop choruses.
This volume captures the team’s late-eighties sound through hits including “Love in the First Degree”, “The Harder I Try” and “Who’s Leaving Who?”. Three extended selections add extra appeal: the 12-inch remixes of Jason Donovan’s “Nothing Can Divide Us”, Kylie Minogue’s “I Should Be So Lucky” and Sinitta’s “Cross My Broken Heart”.
The pictured sleeve features artist portraits on the front and individual song notes on the reverse, alongside a photograph of the production trio. It’s a lively snapshot of the PWL era, balancing familiar singles with less obvious selections from Sequal, Steve Walsh and Stock Aitken Waterman themselves.
Stand-Out Tracks
Jason Donovan – “Nothing Can Divide Us” (12" Remix)
An upbeat introduction built around bright keyboards and a strong singalong chorus. The extended mix gives the rhythm and instrumental passages more room than a standard single version. UK No. 5, as noted on the sleeve.
Kylie Minogue – “I Should Be So Lucky” (12" Remix)
One of the defining songs of Kylie’s early career, pairing an immediately recognisable keyboard hook with an infectious chorus. This longer mix stretches out the dance-pop arrangement. UK No. 1, as noted on the sleeve.
Bananarama – “Love in the First Degree”
Layered group vocals and a brisk electronic rhythm give this track its distinctive blend of pop polish and dancefloor energy. Its memorable chorus makes it a natural centrepiece for the compilation. UK No. 3, as noted on the sleeve.
Brother Beyond – “The Harder I Try”
A buoyant rhythm and soulful pop styling distinguish this selection from the compilation’s more overtly electronic tracks. Its punchy arrangement delivers one of the album’s most exuberant moments. UK No. 2, as noted on the sleeve.
Mel & Kim – “That’s the Way It Is”
Confident vocals and crisp programmed percussion carry this energetic dance-pop selection. The sisters’ personality gives it an edge that sits neatly alongside the album’s brighter pop material. UK No. 10, as noted on the sleeve.
