Album Introduction
The Right Stuff: Remix 89 brings together dance-pop, house, hip-hop and soul in a colourful snapshot of late-1980s club music. Released in 1989 on Stylus Music, the compilation features Technotronic, Inner City, De La Soul, Paula Abdul, S’Express, A Guy Called Gerald and more.
The two records are organised into four themed sides: Hits Remix, House Remix, Soul Remix and Latin House Mix. Familiar selections such as “Pump Up the Jam”, “Straight Up” and “Big Fun” sit alongside club favourites including “Voodoo Ray”, “Numero Uno” and “Sueño Latino”.
The pictured gatefold sleeve includes artist photographs and notes by Barry Lazell discussing remix culture and the dance sounds of the period. Its vivid pink, turquoise and black artwork makes it an unmistakably late-1980s addition to a dance-vinyl collection.
Stand-Out Tracks
“Pump Up the Jam” – Technotronic featuring Felly
A persistent electronic rhythm and an immediately recognisable hook give this selection its direct dancefloor appeal. It opens the House Remix side with a burst of energy.
“Big Fun (Club Remix)” – Inner City
Melodic vocals meet a driving electronic backing in this club-focused selection. Its balance of soulful expression and rhythmic momentum makes it a natural highlight of the Soul Remix side.
“Say No Go (Say No Dope Mix)” – De La Soul
Playful vocal interplay and a sample-led groove bring a hip-hop contrast to the collection. The arrangement adds variety without losing the compilation’s dance-oriented feel.
“Voodoo Ray” – A Guy Called Gerald
An atmospheric electronic groove and distinctive vocal fragments give this track its hypnotic character. It offers a deeper, more spacious contrast to the brighter pop selections.
“Sueño Latino (The Latin Dream Edit)” – Sueño Latino
Flowing textures and a steady dance rhythm introduce a more expansive mood. Its placement on the Latin House Mix side highlights another strand of the compilation’s varied club sound.
