Alphabet City is the third studio album by ABC — now the duo of Martin Fry and Mark White following Stephen Singleton's departure after Beauty Stab — released in 1987 on Neutron Records and produced by Anne Dudley and J.J. Jeczalik of Art of Noise, reuniting Fry and White with two of the key collaborators from The Lexicon of Love era. The album represented a deliberate return to the polished, sophisticated pop sound that had made ABC famous, and was rewarded with a No. 7 UK Albums Chart position and two UK Top 20 singles. The album is structured as an alphabetical journey: it opens with the 53-second instrumental Avenue A and closes with the 42-second Avenue Z, bookending 11 tracks of elegant, synth-driven pop. When Smokey Sings — a tribute to Smokey Robinson and one of the most melodically generous singles of ABC's career — reached No. 11 in the UK and demonstrated that Fry's songwriting gift remained completely intact.
