Alannah Myles is the debut studio album by Alannah Myles, released in 1989 on Atlantic Records and produced by David Tyson. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Myles had spent years performing on the Canadian club circuit before this debut album brought her international recognition. The album sold over 4 million copies worldwide and spawned the single Black Velvet — written by Christopher Ward and David Tyson as a tribute to Elvis Presley — which reached No. 1 in the United States, No. 2 in the UK and won the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1991. Myles's voice — smoky, powerful and with a natural blues quality that draws on Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt — gives the album a raw authenticity that distinguishes it from the more polished end of the late 1980s rock market. The album's 10 tracks range from the blues-rock of Black Velvet and Rock This Joint to the more melodic pop-rock of Love Is and Just One Kiss, demonstrating the full range of Myles's musical personality.
