American Life is the tenth studio album by Madonna, released in April 2003 on Maverick Records and produced entirely by Mirwais Ahmadzaï — the French-Afghan electronic producer who had collaborated with Madonna on Music (2000). The album arrived at one of the most politically charged moments of the early 2000s — the US invasion of Iraq had begun just weeks before its release — and Madonna's decision to withdraw the original anti-war video for the title track, replacing it with a more neutral version, became one of the most discussed moments of her career. The album is her most lyrically introspective and politically engaged work, drawing on themes of celebrity, consumerism, spirituality and American identity. It reached No. 1 in the UK and across Europe, and includes Die Another Day — the theme to the James Bond film of the same name, which reached No. 3 in the UK. Produced with Mirwais's characteristic blend of distorted guitars, glitchy electronics and acoustic folk elements, it remains one of Madonna's most distinctive and polarising albums.
