An Innocent Man is the ninth studio album by Billy Joel — born William Martin Joel in the Bronx, New York — released in August 1983 on Columbia Records. The album reached No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 1 on the Billboard 200. A loving tribute to the sounds of 1950s and 1960s pop, doo-wop, soul and early rock 'n' roll, the album was inspired by the music Joel grew up listening to. Uptown Girl reached UK No. 1 and US No. 3 (1983) — inspired by Christie Brinkley, whom Joel later married. Tell Her About It reached US No. 1 (1983), The Longest Time reached US No. 14 (1984) and An Innocent Man reached US No. 10 (1984).
