Don't Be Cruel is the second studio album by Bobby Brown, released in June 1988 on MCA Records. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Brown had first come to prominence as a member of New Edition before launching a solo career that this album would transform into one of the most commercially dominant in late 1980s R&B. The album was produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface (Kenny Edmonds) alongside Teddy Riley, whose production style — fusing hip-hop rhythms with R&B melody and funk grooves — effectively defined the new jack swing genre. The album spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, sold over 12 million copies worldwide and spawned three US No. 1 singles: My Prerogative (also UK No. 6), Roni and Rock Wit'cha. Every Little Step won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male in 1990.
