Faster Than the Speed of Night is the fifth studio album by Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Neath, Wales, released in April 1983 on CBS Records and produced by Jim Steinman — the songwriter and producer behind Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell (1977) and one of the most distinctive creative voices in 1980s rock. The album debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and its centrepiece, Total Eclipse of the Heart — written by Steinman and running to nearly seven minutes — spent four weeks at No. 1 in the UK and one week at No. 1 in the United States, making it one of the longest singles ever to top the UK chart. The album opens with a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Have You Ever Seen the Rain? (written by John Fogerty, 1971), demonstrating Tyler's ability to inhabit classic rock material with complete conviction. Tyler's voice — famously damaged by a throat operation in 1976 that gave it its distinctive rasp — is given material by Steinman that demands and rewards exactly that quality of raw, emotionally unguarded power.
