Auberge is the thirteenth studio album by Chris Rea, released in February 1991 on EastWest Records and produced by Rea himself. Born in Middlesbrough to an Italian father, Rea's music has always drawn on a dual cultural inheritance — the blues and rock traditions of the north of England combined with the warmth, melody and Mediterranean atmosphere of his Italian roots — and Auberge is the fullest and most successful expression of that synthesis. The album debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and became the biggest-selling album of his career, selling over 2 million copies worldwide. The seven-minute title track — a slow-building, atmospheric blues-rock epic — is widely regarded as one of the finest songs Rea has written, and its combination of his distinctive slide guitar work, a brooding, cinematic arrangement and a vocal of complete authority gives it a grandeur that few British rock songs of the era could match. The album's sound — warm, unhurried, suffused with Mediterranean light — makes it one of the most distinctive and immediately recognisable British rock albums of the early 1990s.
